The Burnout Epidemic by Jennifer Moss
Context: Resilience, burnout on teams and with friends and colleagues has me looking at more research-grounded approaches to tackling burnout. I appreciate how the narrative around burnout has moved from a person only issue to also an organizational culture challenge - and sometimes the fit between the two (POF - personal-organization fit, which is not the same as the sometimes biased and hidden reason certain reason certain people aren’t hired; here is a link to better understand the concept:
A few highlights:
‼️ Leaders and organizations of authority (e.g. HR) need to understand their role in culture and in contributing to conditions for burnout
💡Purpose-driven people often balance engagement with risk of burnout.
❓ Curiosity (one of my personal favorite leadership tools) can help reduce stress in ourselves and in the teams we lead. But it needs to be the right kind of curiosity. (Hint: the author shares that answer.)
Seven and a Half Lessons About the Brain by Lisa Feldman Barrett
Context: I am increasingly curious about the brain and how we impact each other intentionally or unintentionally. So many important learnings in this book.
A few highlights:
➕ The idea that the world around us is “tuning and pruning” our brain.
‼️ The importance of curating new experiences.
❤️ “There is a real biological benefit when people treat one another with basic human dignity.”
‼️ “The price of personal freedom is personal responsibility for your impact on others.”
The last quote is a powerful one - I recommend reading to the end.
